Quick racing recap from the EGCC Berkshire branch:
Ben Houston writes…. Story so far in 2021…. After a very short racing season (September only) in 2020 it was great to see more events back from May 2021.
This year I really wanted to tick off a few targets after a solid winter training on Zwift under my own coaching plan.
First up back into the road racing with a BC event at Thruxton motor racing circuit – 1 hour full gas plus the bell lap. Great to be back in the mix with 60 other riders and happy to finish safely in the pack! Then switched to concentrate on my preferred TT distance – the 10 mile with a series of solid results during May and June;
20:16 at the VTTA London and Home Counties for 13th place
20:37 for 4th overall and 1st Veteran at the Bedfordshire Road event
20:13 and 20:40 at my local Farnborough and Camberley club 10
Culminating in the 19:49 at the Hemel Hempstead event to tick off that objective of a 30mph ride, phew! Been a long time coming considering my first TT was in 1991 😉
Early July saw the long standing Finsbury Park 50 mile TT event on one of the classic F1B/50 TT courses at Tempsford in Bedfordshire. Can remember reading about this one in the Comic in the 1990s and it was like a Who’s Who of time trialling back in the day. Field was a bit diminished this year as more popular courses have taken over recently. A heavy rainstorm during the second lap made things interesting mid way round but managed to gather myself back together and finish strong for a personal best 1:51:18 and 4thplace overall / 1st Veteran on the day.
Hope to keep the racing mojo going for a few more events and great to bump into other EGCC familiar faces at the events from time to time as well.
