Saturday was the day for the Kingston Phoenix road clubs ‘Fabulous Phoenix Fifteen’. Last year the event was held on one of the hottest days of the year, oh how thins have changed. All the way to Kingsfold I was wondering if I was doing the right thing as one heavy shower followed another. Once there I reluctantly got out of my car and strolled to the HQ to sign on.
Not many had signed on but Angela Nainby, the only other Grinnie has already done so, so I did likewise. All during my preparation the rain came and went but for the ride itself I was glad it eased up and off I went. I expected a lonely ride as 3 riders before me had failed to start and I only expected to be caught by one rider. Going round the course I saw several abandonment’s due to punctures and prayed that I would not become one of them. My luck held and it wasn’t long before I had the finish in sight and at that instant number 59 stormed past me to take me for 6 minutes.
I was glad to finish and with a time of 39:30 I had made a 32 second improvement on last years time. Angela stormed home also with a 22 second improvement from last year to come joint 1st Lady with Tamar Collis from Addiscombe CC in a time of 39:45.
The event was won by number 59, Rob Enslin from AW Cycles RT with a time of 33:27 42 seconds faster that pre race favourite Keith Coffey. Keith was perhaps a little tired as he had also ridden with Tamar on a tandem earlier that afternoon.
