SCCU 25m TT April 19th
The Southern Counties Cycling Union (SCCU) 25 was held on the G25/54 course which looks to be a semi permanent alternative to the usual G25/53 that has been suspended for most of the last 2 years due to road works on the A24. The event was a scratch, handicap and team time trial but I did not see any more than solo riders
Only 2 of the 80 riders on start sheet for the 2015 race were from EGCC being Steve Dennis and Ben Crick who both made it to the start and finish lines. Steve was off 60 and Ben 79.
No rain, the sun was visible so all good except for a brisk North Easterly which meant more than 50% of the course would be into wind, nice! This is a fast course but the 30 roundabouts do add an element of chance to the day as you can get held up but they do give a chance for a breather.
I set off at 08:19 and with Nick Dwyer being the last man off, just 1 minute behind me I knew it was going to be a lonely ride once he passed (which he did within 3 miles!) The wind was nasty and by the first turn my AVG speed was 21MPH so no PB’s today. The run back to the start was fast thanks to the tail wind but you never make up the lost time as you spend more time going slow than fast, if that make sense. On the second lap, I saw Steve crossing the finish line and looking at my computer, calculated he was under 56 so the wind even impacts the top guys which was some comfort as I was suffering.
I ground out another lap and got under 1:05 and wondered if the wind effects us bigger chaps with more “frontal resistance” 🙂
