Members of the EGCC were out in force for the Sussex Cyclist’s
Association 50 mile time trial on Sunday. No fewer than Seven riders
were down to ride out of a field of 56, that included 2 former National
Champions at 12 and 24 hours.
Angela Nainby made a welcome return to time trialling after several
weeks absence and showed us she hasn’t lost any of her speed with a 2hr
17min ride. Good enough for 1st Lady.
Kevin Bashford found enough time around his gruelling “iron man”
training regime to fit in a “50”, but unfortunately was a DNF after a
crash at about quarter distance.
With only a four minute gap between Paul Winkley and Andy Seltzer,
there was bound to be a “catch me if you can” situation developing at
some point and sure enough, Andy on for a 2.07.57, caught Paul with
about 10 to go. Paul finishing with a “cooked” head in a 2.14.06.
Next on the road was “super” Ted Boorman who obviously found a 07:13
start time to his liking and managed to make it to the timekeeper!
Fully “aeroed up” he returned in 2.09.45. Nothing spectacular by his
Next up was Richard Woodward. Riding his first 50 and wearing a road
jersey, he managed a respectable 2.11.29. He should try a skin suit,
It’ll make him go faster!
Off no.90, Steve Dennis started cautiously, wary of the distance and
rising temperature. He gradually increased his pace to set a 27mph
tempo which at the finish equated to a PB time of 1.49.31. Enough for
the win and County Championship (which he first won in 1985).
East Grinstead were 2nd in the team competition.
Everyone seemed to approve of the G50/10 course which went from West
Grinstead to Cowfold to Bolney, back to Cowfold, left to Henfield, back
to Cowfold, left to Buck Barn and south to Washington. You then turn
left at Bramber and Beeding court, turn and retrace to Washington where
you turn left to Findon where you turn again and retrace on the A24 all
the way back to Dial Post – far from boring, I think you will
