Saturday club run to Four Elms
The East Grinstead CC Saturday club run has proved to be a successful outing since it started in the early summer (assuming summer has started) and we are starting to see some regular faces on the run, which adds to the camaraderie. It was also great to see a few of the “Saturday guys” have a go at the Club TT on Tuesday, posting some decent results for a first try and without the aero bling and fast bikes scaring them off. Well done chaps!
Regular club members have been acting as “Shepherds” on the rides and this week Richard Woodward and Ben Crick took the run out to Four Elms Garden Centre via some country lanes, which I am sure were not on the original route. The hot drinks, lovely cakes and some eggs on toast were most welcome after 20 miles and we timed it just right, as about 20 cyclists turned up just as we were leaving this popular cafe-stop.
What made the ride very special was being in the company of Ron Longstaff, one of our newer members and certainly our most senior rider in age and experience. Ron has over a million miles in those legs and he can still ride well and descends like the racer he has been for over 60 years, keeping close to our club chairman who is known for his downhill skills as well.
We rode home via Edenbridge and Lingfield and I have to say that for someone who spends a lot of time on the turbo trainer, that was the most I have enjoyed riding for a long time.
If you fancy joining us, keep an eye on the club website for the next ride and be assured it is gentle and no-one gets dropped. This week’s average speed was 12.5 MPH.
