Night Ride

This is a really simple idea which has mushroomed into one of the biggest regular rides in the calendar. The concept is simple; turn up with a bike and lights at Hyde Park Corner at midnight on the Friday nearest the full moon and ride to the coast.

The routes are planned meticulousy in advance by Simon the CTC organiser and have included Brighton; Southend, West Wittering, Newhaven and Cuckmere Haven. Up to 60 riders turn up; but with riders regularly getting caught by red lights the peleton makes slow progress as it regroups.

On the Brighton rides “Tourist Tony” of Horley lays on a wonderful hot buffet supplemented by the cakes brought by the riders at the half way. Dawn brings the joy of riding daylit lanes free of traffic and after an early morning ascent of Ditchling Beacon the riders cram into the first cafe they can find for a full English before defying Southern’s bike restrictions to get back home.
