Pouring rain. Redhill’s team understandably unsure of track safety headed home for Zwift. EGCC just Luke + me. Oxted brought Tom Webby, Simon Arnold, Marcel Rizza and Catherine Howe.
One gate crasher – Stuart Thorn. In the event the rain gods relented, the track drained fast (that’s why it’s banked!), coach Joseph went ahead.
So it was in to warm up, then skills (squaring the circle, 7 abreast stacking), then some fun.
In the team pursuit it was 3 to count. We planned that, as the slowest rider of our 4, I’d blast it for the first lap then be prepared to get dropped. But our team split and it was game over – I could hear Luke casually humming an annoying tune as the 3 of them caught us and literally whistled past.
Then pairs on the blue for recovery, a bit ragged but what the hell.
Finally ‘Last Man Standing’ – it was pretty soon down to the 3 quick guys. Tom and Simon 1 and 2, (couldn’t see which way round, I was half a lap back by then) Luke 3rd, maintaining Wayne’s bike’s record of a podium finish in every race it’s done. Hence the point score
Oxted 5 points, E.Grinstead 1, Redhill 0.
My bike was still pretty clean at the end. My socks weren’t.
