This Sunday, instead of doing what I should have been doing – supporting local events and riding the SCCU 50, I blagged a lift up to Essex with our good friend Robin Johnson to ride the Chelmer CC 25.
This event is held on the “sporting” E9/25 Leaden Roding/Dunmow course just to the north of Chelmsford, using single carriageway roads and has a real rural feel about it.
With temperatures forecast to hit 30 degrees later in the day, it was warming up nicely by my 9.50 start time. Indeed, 2 minutes into my ride and I was already over heating and with little or no tree cover along the course I was thinking I’m glad it’s only a 25 and not a 50!
The course basically climbs for about 11 miles then there’s a short decent to the turn followed by the climb back up to High Roding and then it’s pretty much a rolling decent back to the finish.
By the turn my legs were starting to turn to jelly with the heat (having opted to not take a bottle), and the rising South-Westerly hindering the expected fast finish probably put paid to any ideas of beating the course record that I set last year. My theory proved correct as at the finish I stopped the Garmin at 53:09 – 13 seconds short of last years time.
Still, it was more than enough for a win as the next fastest ride was a tie for 2nd place with 57:15. Another one in the bag for my SPOCO SE campaign. Just got to get a good place in a 10 now.
